Useful productivity tool; just read the instructions.
I wanteed to be able to just point my mouse in a Finder window and be able to create a new document right there. I was all set to do an AppleScript solution when I found this app. For a $1 it seemed like a better choice than perhaps spending an hour or more of my time coming up with my own solution. This utility puts an icon in the menu bar, but more important it gives me the right-click create-it-here function I wanted. Well it did, after I figured out how to use it.
First mistake I made was right-clicking in the blank space in a Finder window. This doesn’t work. As the instructions say, you need to right-click on a folder/file. The next surprise was not seeing the “New File Here”. On my Mavericks machine, I needed to look in “Services” at the bottom of the right-click menu. This is also mentioned in the instructions.
There is a long list of pre-defined templates. What you want is probably already here. Creating new templates is straightforward. Your custom templates can live anywhere, but you may want to create a separate folder for all of them. Just give the template a descriptive name, and give it the desired file extension (.txt, .css .html, .numbers, etc.). Then using the icon in the menu bar, select preferences, hit the “+” button, and navigate to your template.
One last feature which is a nice touch — in the preferences/template list, you can select “Executable” so that the new file is created with the correct file permissions.
Bottom line — I could have spent hours building something myself, and it would not have been as nice as this. A dollar well spent! Thanks to the author for publishing this utility.
